Persian Calligraphy

Hafez

Shams-od-Din Mohammad, known as Hafez (1324?-1391 A.D.), is probably the best Persian poet. His poem book can be found in almost any Iranian home. He lived in the beautiful city of Shiraz (known as the city of roses and nightingales), and his tomb is in a garden in Shiraz. Some Links:

Molana

Jalal al-Din Mohammad al-Rumi (1207-1273 A.D.), known as Molavi or Molana, is a great Persian mystic poet. His famous books are

  • Masnavi, which is a collection of nice stories and maxims (for example, the story of Alchemist, the best-seller novel of Paulo Coelho, is mentioned with some minor differences in Masnavi)
  • Divan-e Shams, which is a collection of mystical ghazals, and
  • Fihe-ma-fih, which is a collection of mystical sayings.

Omar Khayyam (1048-1131? A.D.) is a Persian mathematician and poet who lived in Nishapur. He is famous for his Robaiyyate (quatrains). His Robaiyyat was translated to English by Edward Fitzgerald.

Muslih al-Din (1213?-1292? A.D.), known as Sa'di, is another great Persian poet who lived in Shiraz, and his tomb is currently in Shiraz. He is well known for his two books: Boostan, which is collection of poems, and Golestan, which is a collection of prose stories and short poems and maxims. He has also written some nice ghazals.

Sohrab Sepehri

Sohrab Sepehri (1928-1980 A.D.) is a contemporary Persian poet and painter. He was born in Abianeh, a village near Kashan, and is buried in Mashad Ardehal, another village near Kashan.

Ahmad Shamloo

Ahmad Shamloo (1925 A.D.-July 24, 2000) is one of the most celebrated contemporary poets of Iran. Many of his poems have a political flavor.

Hamid Mosaddegh

Hamid Mosaddegh is a poet and lawyer. His most famous poem book is aabi-khaakestari-siaah.

Mehdi Akhavan Sales

Mehdi Akhavan Sales (1928-1990 A.D.) is a great Persian poet from Mashad. He is buried in Tous near the tomb of Ferdowsi.

Nima Youshij

Nima Youshij (1895-1959 A.D.) is the pioneer of the contemporary Persian poetry.

Foroogh Farrokhzad

Foroogh Farrokhzad (1935-1967 A.D.) is probably the best female contemporary Persian poet. Her famous poem books are Tavallodi digar and Iman biaavarim be aaghaaz-e fasl-e sard.
